Who is The Healthy Gamer?

My name is Jack. I’ve been a hardcore gamer all my life, and I’ve also struggled with many of the issues gamers struggle with. Depression, poor health, low self-esteem. This is why I created The Healthy Gamer. My goal is to motivate and inspire gamers into reaching their full potential and help gamers build their dream lives.

I was born in China and moved to the US when I was eight years old. Growing up as a tiny Asian kid in a school of 99% white people created a boatload of insecurities. Maybe it would have been fine if I was great at sports, or popular. But, I was the kid that read The Wheel of Time(Robert Jordan) between classes. In Middle School when I went home I would play Ultima Online and Everquest. The closest I got to a girlfriend was a girl who “went out” with me for a day and then dumped me via the answering machine(embarassing).

All through middle school, high school, and most of college I tried to pretend to be all these different people, but deep down inside I held the belief that I wasn’t cool, I wasn’t attractive, and that I was still this little nerdy Asian kid that everyone picked on.

I got really serious about bodybuilding when I was 20 and it completely changed my life. Going to the gym everyday proved to me that with hard work and dedication everything in our lives could be changed for the better. This changed my whole outlook on life. Rather than being a victim and blaming external events for my situation I took responsibility and started actively working to change aspects of myself that I didn’t like. I started devouring self-development books and I took responsibility. And I changed.

I am now 25, graduated with my Masters in Accounting in May, and serve in the Army National Guard as an Infantryman, and now I make a full-time living working for myself doing what I love. Depression, social anxiety, low-self esteem. Those issues are all memories of a different person. My mind is filled with optimism for the future and everywhere I look I see opportunities. Life has never been better and I’ve never been happier to be alive.

The message I want to convey to you is that no matter how depressed, how hopeless, how insecure, how un-confident you feel today you can change. You can become the person you’ve always known you were destined to be. The only thing holding you back from the life of your dreams is your own beliefs. Change your beliefs and you will change your life.

Very inspiring speech you held there :P
I had a pretty similar way, being captivated by WoW for 4-5 Yearsm now playing D3, LoL, BF3 and Tribes.
I started working on my body with Muay Thai last year, but lost interest unfortunately.
Since I watch your pro tricks and tips (also being an avid monk player myself :D ) I am becoming motivated to work out again, although it’s not in a gym but at home through MT training-sessions :)

    Greetings,
    Luis

    • The Healthy Gamer

Thanks Luis! Always been interested in Muai Thai, what did you think?

      • Luis

        About Muay Thai?
I just like it being something to train your whole body with. It also is about both fast movement and also about lasting energy. Furthermore sparring with friends always is fun and if needed, you can make use of it.
And lastly it’s not as “boring” as normal boxing as you make vast use of all your limbs :D

Powerful post and a great message! Not a gamer, but I look forward to your healthy living posts. I’m interested to know which self-help books you found most helpful. It’s an interesting genre in it’s own right. (Happy 4th!)
    Be well,
    Mari

      Hi Mari! :)

Let’s see, off the top of my head: Anything by Tony Robbins, Think and Grow Rich, Code to Joy(Really really recommend this one), of course have your classics like How to Win Friends and Influence people, 7 habits of highly effective people, and I found the chicken soup books are really great for getting some inspiration and motivation when you’re down. Happy 4th! Hope all goes well with the baby.

    Hey Jack!

Ya mentioned ya “make a full-time living working for myself.” Are you talking about army, accounting, or something else?

    • The Healthy Gamer

This website is one of those ventures, and then I build websites for small businesses on the side, also do internet/social media marketing for small businesses, and then starting a few more small businesses with friends :)

The Army is just something I’ve always wanted to do, it pays like absolute hell, but it teaches you a lot about yourself and you meet some great people. And I’m not going to touch anything to do with accounting lol.

Heya Jack, web development tip for ya… When you complete your design have a look at your work on an iPad, you will find small errors / layout issues and this is how most will view your sites ;)

    Hey Jack,

One of your fans. I was wondering after watching your video where you give a short bio of yourself…. you mentioned the beauty of life is that you can choose to do something different. I was curious if you’re still going to do accounting, and if not, what will you do. Is it fitness trainer or something like that?

I ask this because I’m currently in community college trying to become a nurse. Although its a typical asian stereotype, the only reason I can think that I want to do nursing is because I like to help people, there are jobs almost everywhere, and the pay isn’t bad. However, I’m not exactly sure if this is something I’d want to do because I can’t try it out until I go through 2+ years of schooling for it.

How did you find what you wanted to do with your life? It’s something I’ve been asking myself daily. I’m 21, but am not really sure how to find what exactly I’m supposed to do.

    P.s.
How did you initially get interested in accounting?
And maybe I mixed you up with another youtuber, but I could have sworn I heard you mention in a video you were in the army… maybe I’m wrong.

    • The Healthy Gamer

I’m working full time building businesses. The healthy gamer is one of these. Just stick around and you’ll see how I plan to really make a living with this website :)

I read a lot of self development books and did a lot of meditation. The more in-tune with your inner self you are, the more you’ll be able to start figuring out what you’re really supposed to be doing on this Earth.

Yes I am in the Army as well.

I think you have something great here. im in the same boat of a hardcore gamer and living a healthy lifestyle. I do judo at a national level, but im also a huge gamer, sinking hundreds of hours into games like monster hunter, cod and now D3. Excercise totally changed my life too during my senior year going from a 135lbs stoner to a 175lbs national champion. What you said about dedication and perserverance is 100% true, you can change any aspect of your life for the better. I really hope your message gets around because i can tell your passionate about this. Good work and good luck, youve got yourself a fan

    • The Healthy Gamer

Very cool, what competitions do you do with Judo?

    Hey Jack,

Great website, I started watching your videos at first on YouTube when I am on the road. Its great to hear that you are doing this and having a set of purpose behind not video gaming. Giving back to the community.

I am in the National Guard like you and asian who used to play Warcraft and I play a monk =). Keep up those videos, I been sharing your videos to my friends and I hope you keep making those healthy tips.

I haven’t started using your recipe’s yet but plan on eventually get there. Again keep up the good work, and I am a fan of you.

I have pretty much gone through the same situation as an Asian American born in Vietnam, weighted 125 lbs for a 5 foot 9 inches fella. Joined the Army and changed my way of life.

    • The Healthy Gamer

Very cool nice to meet another NG member and fellow Asian who improved their life :)
