The secret is to do lots of little sets of pushups. You want to do between 15-30% of your maximal effort. It’s better to do five sets of 20 than one set of 100. And it’s better to do five sets of 20 everyday instead of doing one set of 100 once or twice a week.
So the secret really to improving any kind of endurance event(runs, pullups, etc.) is to do lots of non-maximal effort sets throughout the week. If you’re a beginner what I would recommend is doing 3 sets of pushups in the morning, 3 sets of pushups at night, five times a week, at 15-20% of your max effort. So if you can do a max of 25 pushups you should do three sets of five in the morning, three sets of five at night, five times a week.
It seems a little counter-intuitive, but doing that will improve your pushups MUCH faster than trying to do a max set of 25 everyday.
