Get LEAN for the Summer – How To Lose Belly Fat Fast While Maintaining Muscle Mass

This post is for my Youtube subscribers, readers of The Healthy Gamer, and users on the various forums(especially reddit and bodybuilding.com) that have helped to share the healthy gaming message. Thank you for helping me reach 10,000 Youtube subscribers. I am deeply appreciative of the wonderful support you have bestowed upon me and the healthy gaming ideal. I’ve created this comprehensive guide to help you lose stubborn belly fat while maintaining lean muscle mass as a token of my appreciation.

Understand Hormone Signaling to Understand Why You’re Packing on the Fat

“We are the masters of our fate, the captains of our soul.” – Winston Churchill

Insulin – Insulin is a hormone. It signals to your body that glucose needs to be stored. Insulin is released in response to glucose entering the blood stream. ALL carbohydrates(sugar, whole grain, complex, and simple) are broken down into glucose. Your body releases insulin in direct proportion to the volume of glucose in your blood. Glucose needs to be either burned as fuel, stored in the liver and muscles, or stored as fat. High levels of glucose in the bloodstream is toxic to the body.

Insulin stops the use of fat as an energy source by inhibiting the release of glucagon. With the exception of the metabolic disorder diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, insulin is provided within the body in a constant proportion to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic. – Wiki

Low-carb diets like the ketogenic diet are the gold-standard for losing fat. Low-carb diets by definition limit the amount of glucose entering your bloodstream thereby eliminate blood sugar(glucose) spikes. This mediation of blood glucose then eliminates large insulin spikes.

With our new understanding of insulin it is easy to see why the average person eating a standard Western diet has weight issues. Most of their meals consist at least 100g of fast-digesting carbohydrates made up of breads, pastas, and flours: pizza, burger buns, sandwiches(subway is a terrible choice for weight loss), pasta sides, sugary cereal, and sugary soft-drinks.

MMmmm... pizza.
MMmmm… pizza.

These processed carbohydrates are easier for our digestive system to break down and thus introduce glucose into our bloodstream faster and at higher volumes than carbohydrate rich vegetables and fruits. It requires nine cups of strawberries to equal the sugar content of one 20 oz soda. As we learned earlier, high levels of glucose is toxic to the body, so our bodies must do something with it. Glucose stored in the liver and muscles are used during exercise. If these stores are depleted then blood glucose is shuttled to these stores(muscle and liver) before it is stored in fat- this is good. This explains why nutrition and fitness experts recommend eating your large portions of carbohydrates only after exercise.

The problem for most Westerners is that their carbohydrate consumption is completely out of balance with their physical activity level. I am a very active man and I only need an average of 150g of carbohydrates per day to keep my muscle and liver glycogen levels full. The average westerner consumes on average 300g of carbohydrates per day. And they don’t exercise. With every meal they are storing glucose as fat. With every meal they are releasing a hormone into their body that inhibits their body’s ability to use fat as energy. And then you get to listen to them whine about how hard it is to lose weight.

Type 2 Diabetes is a direct result of our standard Western diet’s effect on insulin.

When you have type 2 diabetes, your fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin. This is called insulin resistance. As a result, blood sugar does not get into these cells to be stored for energy. – PubMed

If you have eaten a high carbohydrate diet for all of your life it is likely that you are insulin resistant to some degree. Insulin resistance causes lethargy, fat gain, and will eventually lead to type two diabetes. I’ll show you how you can easily reverse all of this with a few simple steps later in this article.

The final piece of the insulin puzzle are its effects on your hunger and energy levels. Think “sugar crash.” You eat something high in sugar, feel manic and are filled with frenetic energy for half an hour, and then your energy levels plummet. You’re left feeling lethargic and moody. Your brain personified would look like a foggy night in London. This is because the high carbohydrate meal you just ate flooded your blood with glucose. Your body responded accordingly by releasing high levels of insulin. While the glucose was still in your blood-stream you had high levels of energy but insulin is a very efficient hormone and quickly transports the glucose to your liver, muscles, and fat cells. Insulin is so efficient infact that large insulin responses will leave you with too-little glucose in your bloodstream. This then signals to your body that you need immediate energy and you will feel sharp cravings for more high carbohydrate foods. A vicious cycle.

Leptin – Leptin a hormone that tells your body that you are full. It counteracts other hormones which tell your body to feed. Leptin is released in large quantities when you eat fats and proteins and in lesser quantities when you eat carbohydrates.

Leptin acts on receptors in the hypothalamus of the brain, where it inhibits appetite

  1. counteracting the effects of neuropeptide Y (a potent feeding stimulant secreted by cells in the gut and in the hypothalamus)
  2. counteracting the effects of anandamide (another potent feeding stimulant that binds to the same receptors as THC)
  3. promoting the synthesis of α-MSH, an appetite suppressant. – Wiki
Mmm... bacon
Mmm… bacon

Fats and proteins cause significantly more leptin to be released than carbohydrates. Just think about a typical standard breakfast. You can eat pancakes all day. But how many plates of bacon and sausage could you eat before you started to feel sick?

The added satiety afforded by fats and proteins because of leptin is an essential weapon in your war against fat. You can “diet” without feeling starved all day. You can shed fat effortlessly while eating your favorite foods- like bacon!

When we don’t have blood sugar crashes that are caused by insulin spikes we won’t crave sugars and carbohydrates. When we eat meals that are high in fat and protein we stay satiated all day.

Cortisol – Cortisol is a hormone that tells your body to release energy(stored in fat cells). Cortisol is naturally highest in the morning, but is also release when the body is under stress- mental or physical.

Cortisol is very beneficial when it is in balance. However, most of us do not have healthy levels of cortisol due to our high-stress modern lifestyle. Elevated cortisol, like insulin, can wreak havoc in your body. Elevated levels of cortisol actually leads to weight gain and a resistance to fat-loss(especially visceral and belly fat).

If you have a layer of belly fat that you just can’t seem to lose no matter what you try then it is almost certain that you have chronically elevated cortisol.

Sustained high cortisol levels are dangerous because they:

  • Slow down healing and normal cell regeneration.
  • Co-opt parent molecules needed to make other vital hormones
  • Impair digestion, metabolism and mental function
  • Interfere with healthy endocrine function
  • Weaken your immune system – Source

Cortisol also counteracts the effects of insulin and conversely insulin counteracts the effects of cortisol. Therefore we want to minimize our insulin levels in the morning to take full advantage of the enhanced fat metabolism caused by our naturally high cortisol levels.

When we eat we want our cortisol to be at a low point so our bodies can efficiently store our nutrients in our muscles(because some insulin is good, without it we could never put on any mass, and bodybuilders have for years been injecting themselves with insulin before meals in order to gain weight faster).

So then it makes sense to eat our big meals later in the day when our cortisol have dropped off naturally. In following this regime we take advantage of the high fat burning power of cortisol in the mornings and let our bodies repair and replenish in the afternoon/evenings.

HGH – HGH or human growth hormone is vital to the repair of our bodies. Studies show that fasting greatly enhances our body’s natural production of HGH.

“Fasting causes hunger or stress. In response, the body releases more cholesterol, allowing it to utilize fat as a source of fuel, instead of glucose. This decreases the number of fat cells in the body,” says Dr. Horne. “This is important because the fewer fat cells a body has, the less likely it will experience insulin resistance, or diabetes.”

This recent study also confirmed earlier findings about the effects of fasting on human growth hormone (HGH), a metabolic protein. HGH works to protect lean muscle and metabolic balance, a response triggered and accelerated by fasting. During the 24-hour fasting periods, HGH increased an average of 1,300 percent in women, and nearly 2,000 percent in men. – ScienceDaily

Increasing our body’s natural output of growth hormone will help you shed fat AND gain muscle. You’ll even wake up feeling more refreshed after a night’s sleep.

A side-note about growth hormone and alcohol: Never go to bed with alcohol in your system. Alcohol deprives your body of the restorative properties of HGH. Alcohol can decrease the secretion of HGH during sleep by as much as 70%.

To Recap the Hormones

  • Insulin – Released when you eat carbohydrates. Too much insulin causes fat gain.
  • Leptin – Tells your brain that you’re full. Proteins and fats release more leptin than carbohydrates.
  • Cortisol – Your body’s “stress hormone.” Naturally highest in the morning. Excessive cortisol causes metabolic problems and stubborn belly and visceral fat.
  • HGH – Repairs the body. Fasting causes increased HGH production. Alcohol inhibits HGH production.

How to Monetize Your Blog

I’ve been approached by a few advertisers and sponsors in the last few weeks wanting to advertise on The Healthy Gamer and this got me thinking about all the different ways to monetize a blog. I know this probably isn’t relevant to most of you, but hell, I’m going to write about it anyways because that’s what you can do when you have your own blog.

Adsense

Google adsense is the simplest form of advertisement that can be put on a blog. All you need to do is sign up with Google(a simple process) and then throw the HTML or javascript they generate for you into a text box widget in your sidebar, and you have automatic ads. It’s a good option to get started when you’re small and can’t attract dedicated advertisers. Don’t expect to get rich from adsense, but it is nice to at recoup your hosing costs.

Amazon Affiliate

Amazon offers an affiliate program where you get a percentage of every sale from traffic that you drive to Amazon.com. Amazon is much better than other affiliate programs because people trust Amazon and buy like crazy from there. So if you write a blog post talking about say standing desks or protein powder just throw in your Amazon affiliate link. Then when your readers buy from Amazon you get a percentage of that sale. They don’t even have to buy anything you linked either. You get a percentage of anything they buy on Amazon within 24 hours of clicking your link. The best part is that it doesn’t cost them any extra money either!

Sell Branded Gear

the chiveSelling branded gear is not only a great way to earn some money, it’s also a great marketing tool. Whoever first thought of putting logos on t-shirts was brilliant. We now pay hundreds of dollars for the privilege of being walking billboards. You can sell t-shirts to promote your brand or even make some t-shirts for giveaways. People love t-shirts. Take a look at almost any top blog(like The Chive) and you’ll see that they sell branded t-shirts. It’s not only promoting their brand but also adding a nice stream of revenue for their website. I’ve been looking around the web and found Quality Logo Products – you can buy custom t-shirts here for $2.75 per shirt. Insanely cheap. Then if you sold them for $10+ shipping it could add a small but steady stream of revenue for even a small blog.

Sell a Product

The best way to monetize a blog is to sell a product. If you could choose between advertising that pays you $1 per 1,000 visitors, or a product that you can sell to ONE person for $50, what is the clear winner?

What you need to focus on when creating a product is solving a person’s needs. A man who can be of service to others will never go hungry. Don’t focus on trying to make money when you are creating your product. Instead focus on the needs of your viewership and figure out how you can best solve that need. In this way you will create loyal customers who will come back to you again and again.

What happens when you don’t focus on the needs of your readers is what you see splattered across the internet. All of these gimmicky “get rich quick” “lose 30lbs in 7 days” info products. They SCREAM scam. And I detest them. These were created by unscrupulous individuals who only had their own profit in mind. Will they make money? Yes. Will their business survive in the long term? No, because anyone who buys their product will grow to resent them for failing to deliver a product that lives up to the hype and as consequently never purchase anything from that business again.

How To Win 1 Hour Hardcore Races in Path of Exile Guide – Shadow Fire Trap Poison Arrow

This entire guide comes directly from Bzmode– the winner of Path of Exile’s second one-hour hardcore race finishing at an astonishing level 20 in just 60 minutes of playtime.

Class and Build

Bzmode uses a Shadow and uses fire trap and poison arrow to quickly AOE down large packs of mobs.

A link to his build here.

Strategy

shadow fire trapBzmode’s success is due largely to his overall strategy and playstyle and not so much to his build(although the fire trap/poison arrow shadow certainly has the best AOE capabilities out of any character out of the gate).

Starting Off

  • Race along the beach. Pop chests that are convenient to pick up scrolls and items but don’t go out of your way to get them. Kill Hillock ASAP and race into town.
  • When you are in town buy a coral ring  for the added hit points and pick up quests in town.
  • Race through the Terraces and only stop to kill large, well-grouped packs(packs of 6+ mobs that are grouped together).
  • Ignore the medicine chest quest and race straight to Mud Flats. While in the Mud Flats just do the quest to open the Submerged Passage and be VERY careful here with the charging birds. They can very easily kill you since you skipped content and will be underleveled. Just avoid all mobs and play it safe here, open the submerged passage and be on your way.
  • In the submerged passage take the waypoint back to town, finish the quest, vendor anything you don’t need and jump right back to the submerged passageway.
  • Kill all large groups here in the submerged passageway – be wary of Merveil’s daughter’s, their cold attacks can one-shot your character.
  • Ignore the quest to kill the giant crab. Go directly to the upper submerged passages, killing all packs of mobs that you come across while avoiding Merveil’s daughters/dangerous rare packs.

The Ledge

  • The skeleton packs here are great to AOE down. RUN right past the big totem boss, he is too dangerous and not worth the risk of death.
  • No need to farm The Ledge, just continue on into The Rocky Climb. – Go back to town with the waypoint in The Ledge and buy a Leather belt for added +hp.
  • Your goal in The Rocky Climb is to continue to move as quickly as you can to the next map, killing packs of mobs that are grouped and easily but avoiding all difficult elite packs.
  • Clear the prison in the same manner- AOE down grouped packs, skipping elites, and avoiding anything that even looks dangerous.
  • Kill Brutus. Use town portals if you need to- one quick trip back to town will re-fill your life/potions and Brutus will not regenerate health.
  • Once you kill Brutus you can log out from the game and log back in. Killing Brutus automatically gives you the waypoint for the next area- no need to run through the rest of his prison.

Killing Merveil

  • In The Prisoner’s Gate – a VERY dangerous area. To play it safe just skip most mob packs- especially the hellhound, he will kill you very easily.
  • The Ship Graveyard again skip most content. Another dangerous area for you. Completely ignore the Captain’s quest and ignore The SHip Graveyard Cave.
  • The Coves – Great place to farm if you feel like farming. Not nearly as dangerous as the previous zones for your character. If you feel like you didn’t play as well or am behind and just want to play it safe and rack up points for levels you can farm The Coves until your hour runs out. Otherwise clear through as fast as possible, killing groups of mobs.
  • Cavern of Wrath – When you find the waypoint here go back to town and buy Sapphire rings. These rings give you frost resist. You can also vendor one iron ring with one blue skill gem to receive a sapphire ring so it’s worth collecting iron rings from the ground and picking blue skill gems from quests where you don’t need any of the given skill gems.
  • When you fight Merveil put on both rings. Fight her in the center of the room. Use portal scrolls as necessary to refill your potions.

Act 2

  • The Forest is a great area to farm, again if you feel inclined. The mob pack density is phenomenal. If you are trying to win the race fight straight-through, killing groups but otherwise moving as quickly as you can.
  • When you get to town buy big health and mana potions and vendor anything you don’t need.
  • Proceed directly to the WEST exit – to River Crossings
  • Stick mainly to the road, be careful, avoid difficult rare packs and keep killing groups.
  • From River Crossings move to the Dark Forest. Again just killing groups of mobs and moving quickly, stick to the road.
  • Finally you should be in the Western Forest. You will farm this zone until time runs out. A good idea is to throw on two ruby rings for the added fire resist. Purchase these in town if you haven’t found any.

Playstyle

You’ll be using a bow and playing a very defensive shoot and scoot playstyle. For example you will drop a trap, then move a few steps to the side, then shoot a poison arrow, and move a few more steps. This keeps most mobs from damaging you and allows you to very efficiently AOE down packs.

Three Natural Remedies for Colds and Flus

Last night I started feeling sick. I first noticed it as I was taking my Saturday morning walk. My body felt unusually tired and I was breathing heavily from simply walking. Later in the day I noticed a feeling of dizzyness when I stood up, and that’s when I knew. I had caught something and these were the beginning symptoms of a cold or a flu. I put my entire life on hold and went into emergency action mode. 16 hours later I feel 100% recovered.

A Healthy Lifestyle Keeps Sickness at Bay

Yes, I realize that this is one of those “duh” comments. Of course living a healthy life helps you fight illness. But it’s worth stating again because how many of you actually live as healthy of a lifestyle as you should or want?

When your body is functioning at full capacity it does a wonderful job of fighting off bacteria and viral infections. That is why the flu is the most dangerous for the young and the elderly. Those two categories of people are most prone to suffering from compromised immune systems because their bodies are not functioning at 100% capacity and thus are most susceptible to viral infections from the flu.

Anything that puts stress on your body can weaken your immune system and therefore open your defenses to sickness. Sleep deprivation, under-eating, drinking alcohol, and even excessive exercise. Yes, even excessive exercise can lead to sickness. Mark Sisson in his book Primal Blueprint said he used to average four upper-respiratory infections per year while he was training as a world-class marathon runner, and he attributes that excessive sickness to the fact that he was putting his body under more stress than he gave it time to recover from, and thus was constantly compromising his immune system.

The best thing you can do to avoid illness and reduce the amount of time you spend sick is to get plenty of rest, eat a diet of unprocessed proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, and supplement your diet with a multi-vitamin, vitamin D, and vitamin C.

Super Immune Boosting Shake

The first thing I did when I started feeling sick was to make a fruit smoothie meal replacement shake. When you get sick you almost always lose your appetite but eating is the BEST immediate action you can take. Your body needs energy and fuel to fight off the illness. By forcing down as many calories as possible in an easy to digest form(like a smoothie) you give your body the calories it needs to mount the most effective defense that it can.

Immune Boosting Shake recipe:

  • Two small oranges – “Cuties” – high vitamin C content
  • 25-50g of protein
  • 4 tblsp of flax seed – for fiber and omega-3 content
  • 2 tblsp coconut oil – Calorie dense and coconuts have great immune boosting properties
  • 1 cup blueberries – packed with antioxidants
  • 1 cup coconut milk

“Coconut oil is used for diabetes, heart disease, chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Alzheimer’s disease, thyroid conditions, energy, and boosting the immune system.” -Web MD

Sweat It Out!

Do you have a fever? FANTASTIC!

“Fever is the body’s normal response to infection — it’s a natural defense mechanism,” says Janice Sullivan, a professor of pediatric clinical care and clinical pharmacology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and a co-author of the report. She says that a high temperature triggers the body’s production of infection-fighting white blood cells and inhibits the growth of viruses and bacteria. “If you lower the fever, you may be affecting the body’s ability to respond to that infection.” – Washington Post

The best thing to do while you have a fever is to drink lots of water, eat as many calories as you can(from healthy unprocessed foods, eating fast food/junk food would only put further strain on your body), and trying to sleep as best you can. Don’t watch TV. Don’t try to play games. Just REST fully. Turn off all distractions and try to sleep. Even if you are not able to completely fall asleep or stay asleep for more than an hour at a time your body is still much better able cope with the illness without extraneous stimulation revving up your adrenal glands.

One caveat- if your fever reaches 103 or lasts for more than 12 hours continuously then it’s time to see a doctor.

I went to bed Saturday after I had eaten as much food as I could stomach(I made a potato, carrot, onion, garlic, and pork stew after I had my super immune boosting shake). I woke up every hour. Every time I woke up I would drink half a liter of water then go back to sleep. Your body uses your waste disposal systems to flush out toxins and this process is vital to helping you overcome the cold or flu. This is why you always hear the old adage to “drink lots of water.” Your body uses more water when you are sick both to fuel the work your ramped up immune system is performing and also to help the body flush out toxins. Therefore it is vital that you consciously drink more water when you are sick.

It is better to wake up every hour to pee than sleep through the night uninterrupted and be completely dehydrated in the morning.

Final Thoughts

Your body has fantastic defenses against every disease and virus known to man- IF you give it the support that it needs to function properly  Humans are not meant to live sickly and infirmed lives. We are designed to be vital beings. With sensible exercise, proper nutrition, plenty of rest, and a positive outlook on life you can almost eliminate disease and sickness.

Thinking back, in the past two years, I have been sick of a total of two days(counting my brief sickness Saturday). And both of those instances occurred because I was sleep deprived(I’ve been waking up at 5am every-day, regardless of when I go to bed, and last Wednesday through Saturday I had gotten an average of 4.5 hours of sleep each night).

Get rid of this idea that illness is a natural course of life. Illness is a sign that you are not giving your body the rest and support it requires to function fully. We can all live lives full of energy and vitality. The first step is to decide to change.
