Diablo 3 Monk Leveling Guide | Levels 45-60

This is part two of my leveling guide. You can find part 1 here giving a guide for levels 30-45.

Level 45

You’ll be in the later acts of Hell. Things should start getting more challenging. If you find you’re dying a lot start picking up more vitality on your gear and stacking a few pieces of +all resist gear.

Build

Recommended build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#aZigXQ!YdX!YYZabZ

This build is focused around generating a ton of spirit so you can spam your Lashing Tail Kick and keep everything stunlocked.

Fists of thunder with the spirit gen rune is wonderful. You should have at least +15 crit chance to use this rune. If you don’t an alternative is to use crippling wave until level 48 where you’ll switch over to way of the hundred fists with the spirited salvo rune(15% chance of generating 15 spirit).

Lashing tail kick is your primary spirit dump. It does great damage and the PBAOE(point blank area of effect) stun will make it so most mobs never actually even hit you. Couple that with the fact that transcendence heals you everytime you use the skill and you should have no trouble surviving.

Activate sweeping wind at the beginning of each fight. It’s wonderful AOE DPS and you can forget about it after you hit that button once.

Serenity and breath of heaven are great for oh sh*t moments, but should also be used proactively. Use serenity whenever you’re about to get hit by a big attack or laser and to avoid/escape from freezing/movement impairing effects. Always keep the 15% damage increase buff up from breath of heaven. Pop it at the beginning of a fight even if you don’t need a heal right then, the DPS increase is worth it and the CD is short enough to allow you to do that safely.

Mantra of healing with the spirit regen rune is great for helping you crank out more lashing tail kicks. Hit this if serenity, breath of heaven, your potion are on CD and you still need a heal. The extra heal for 3 secs is pretty nice ontop of the heal from transcendence for spending 50 spirit and definitely more preferable to dying.

Passives are up to you to play around with depending on your weapon choices and gear set up.

Equipment

This is the point where you want to start picking up pieces of gear with dex, vitality, and all resist. You’ll need it in Hell mode difficulty. Keep an eye out for cheap rings/amulets with +attack speed %. Buy whatever weapons have the highest DPS. Secondary stats on weapons you should look for are attack speed increase, life steal, and + life on hit. Secondary stats to try to find on gear is +crit hit chance, + life on hit.

Still I’d recommend not buying much from the auction house until you hit 60. Just get enough to comfortably kill things.

Tips

If you’re getting stuck on any quests/bosses ask a friend to help! If you can’t find friends, ask someone on a forum. Dj2sp and diablo incgamers are both great D3 communities.

Level 50

Welcome to hell *evil laugh*

Build

Recommended build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#WijgXk!YdX!ZZbaba

This is the same build I’ve used successfully at 60 to clear out Act 1 Inferno in a breeze. Here’s the video I made for it, explaining everything, the only change is that instead of dashing strike the build I linked calls for a mystical ally. That mystical ally will be better for you leveling as it will help your DPS. You’re not trying to really skip trash mobs at 50. If you want a more detailed writeup of the build click here, and then here’s the video explaining the build.

Equipment

Hell is when you need to start stacking your vitality and resists. I recommend getting enough vitality so that you’re not getting 1-shot by mobs, and then focusing on all resist gear, or even better pick a resist(fire/arcane/whatever) and find gear with all resist PLUS that specific resist, and run the one with everything passive. This can help you get some ridiculously high levels of resist and make Hell mode feel like easy mode.

Weapons same goes as before, find the highest DPS, look for life steal, +life on hit, attack speed.

Find attack speed rings and amulets. Have I said that enough times now? 😉

Secondary stats to look for on equipment, +crit hit chance, +life on hit, +attack speed increase.

Tips

You’ll die a lot more in Hell. It’s just part of the game. Try to learn from it and not get too frustrated. Kiting becomes really important starting in Hell. If all your defensive abilities are on cooldown you want to run away until they’re up again before re-engaging. Also kiting with shift click(hold to attack) is vital. Move away, hold down shift, hit them 1-2 times, run away again.

Level 55

You’re almost there! You can do it. You’ll probably run into Belial somewhere in your mid 50’s. Here’s a video tutorial I made showing you the best ways to beat this challenging encounter(in my opinion the most challenging in the game by far).

Build

Honestly I’d just stick with the same build I linked last time. Here it is again: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#WijgXk!YdX!ZZbaba

If you want to try something different here’s one of the first videos I made. This is at 58. Looking back probably not the most efficient build but it’s fun and something different to try. Gives you some good gameplay footage of what I mean when I say “kiting” as well.

Equipment

Resists, resists, resists! Surviving Act IV Hell and Act 1 Inferno(and beyond) are all about your resists and damage mitigation as a monk. At this level I ran a 1h/shield build for extra armor and block and to free up a passive slot, but this is up to you. The important thing is to find a playstyle that you like and make a build around your playstyle, not try to force your playstyle to fit some sort of equipment build. If you don’t like shields, don’t use shields! Plenty of monks are super successful dual wielding or using 2 handers. That’s one of the best parts about D3 is that you’re not FORCED to do anything. Choices are good 🙂

Tips

You’re probably getting pretty good at the game now, so let me give you a farming tip. This is what I did to accumulate gold to gear up for Act 1 Inferno.

I have a TON of level 60 builds for Act 1 Inferno up on this page. Peruse at your leisure and good luck in Inferno 🙂 If you found this guide helpful it would help me out a lot if you would share via the social media buttons to the left side of the screen and post this guide to your favorite D3 forums/websites.

Diablo 3 Monk Leveling Guide: Levels 30 – 45

This is something that a lot of people have been asking for. I figured I’d start with level 30, because normal mode is quite easy and it’s really a time for you to learn your character and try new things. Which I would still advocate continuing on, but thought I’d put together some nice builds and tips to help you get through nightmare and hell modes on your monk.

Level 30

You’re just starting off in nightmare and things should still be fairly easy. This is the part of the game where kiting starts becoming necessary. Don’t hesitate to pop potions and cooldowns, and run away often to let your cooldowns and potions recharge.

Build

Recommended build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#UZdgjh!YXc!abZaaa

The build is designed to let you spam lashing tail kick, which does great damage and also interrupts/knocks back enemies. Way of the hundred fists also performs a knockback, so between the two mobs shouldn’t hit you very often. Use dashing strike to close in with enemies, chase down runners, close in with casters, and keep up with treasure demons.

The mantra and passives are up to you really. If you have trouble surviving take mantra of healing. Passives transcendence is pretty necessary but other then that play around with your other two. Now is the time to play around and see what skills work best for you.

Equipment

Weapons – just get the highest DPS weapon you can find. Get lifesteal or attack speed if you can find it on a weapon for a decent price.

Don’t waste money crafting till 60. You can find much better stuff for way cheaper on the auction house. Buy rings and amulets with attack speed %. Look for items with mostly dexterity. Get a few pieces with vitality if you’re dying a lot. Look for lifesteal on weapons. +life on hit is also a good stat. +crit chance on gloves and weapons are great. Don’t worry about resists at this level.

Tips

Your goal is just to blaze through the quests/acts as fast as you can. Don’t worry about exploring the whole map or every little cave you come across. You’ll get more xp by finishing the main story quests than anything else. But remember this is a game and you’re trying to have FUN! So don’t lose sight of having fun when you’re trying to power through the levels 🙂

Don’t be afraid to blow those CDs(cooldowns). Coming from a WoW background I thought CDs were meant to be saved for emergencies and thus hardly ever used my defensive ones. Get that outta your head! D3 is all about blowing CDs and managing CD timers. Use CDs proactively, pop your serenity when you’re about to get hit by a laser beam or when you’re standing in fire.

Level 35

Things are probably getting a little tougher. Just keep at it and hammering the levels out.

Build

Recommended Build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#bZdgiQ!YXc!bbZaZ

This build is designed to let you spam wave of light, which is a great DPS spirit skill. Activate sweeping wind at the beginning of each fight, it is AMAZING dps. Again use dashing strike to close in with runners, casters, treasure demons, you can also use it to stun enemies that are charging up for a big attack. Mantra of healing mixed with transcendence should be plenty of keep you alive during fights.

Passives again are up to you. The guardian’s path is really good if you’re dual wielding or using a 2hander.

Equipment

Weapons – again get the highest DPS weapons you can find. Attack speed, lifesteal, and life on hit are all great stats.

Stack all dex again unless you’re having difficulty surviving. Then get a few pieces of gear with vitality. Rings/amulets with %attack speed are great and the easiest/fastest way to massively up your DPS. 15% increase to your attack speed is a flat 15% increase to your DPS(makes sense, if you’re attacking 15% faster, you’re doing 15% more DPS). +life on hit, +crit are still both good secondary stats.

I wouldn’t spend anymore than 10k on an item in the auction house. Save your money. Only upgrade the pieces of gear that REALLY need upgrading. You’ll go through the levels so quickly it’s not really worth paying much for stuff in the auction house right now. Vendor all the items you find that aren’t worth selling rather than melting them at the blacksmith, the mats you get at this level are worthless because the things you craft are pretty worthless, so it’s better to get gold from the vendor.

Tips

Again just blaze through the quests ASAP, don’t worry too much about exploring everything.

Start learning to kite. Run away, hold stand to attack(shift) hit the mobs a few times, run away again. This skillset will become invaluable to surviving Inferno.

Level 40

Keep at it, you’re 2/3rds of the way there!

Build

Recommended build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#WZdgik!YdX!bYZaZa

This build is designed to help you maximize your DPS while at the same time giving you enough survivability to make it through the harder difficulty levels of nightmare.

Crippling wave is a really great offensive/defensive ability rolled together. If you find you’re dying often switch out the rune to the one that reduces enemy damage by 20%. Otherwise the increased DPS is great, especially since crippling wave is a real quick AOE attack. Lashing tail kick with the stun rune is AMAZING for surviving large packs. This is your spirit dump and during a fight most of your spirit should be spent spamming lashing tail kick. Between the heals from transcendence and the stun portion of the kick you really should have no trouble staying alive.

Sweeping wind is a staple of my builds just because it’s such great passive set it and forget it AOE DPS. Serenity and breath of heaven are both great to help keep you alive, as you get into harder acts in nightmare having two defensive abilities might be necessary. If not I’d recommend switching out one for a more offensively oriented ability. 7 sided strike or your mystic ally are both great choices.

Mantra of conviction is an AMAZING boost to DPS, and if you find you have extra spirit just hit it a few times. 48% increased damage for 3 seconds after you cast it can make you melt through mobs.

Passives again are more up to you. Pick and choose to see what you like the best.

Equipment

Same ole same ole. Pick the highest DPS weapon be it 1hand or 2hand. Look for items with primarily dex. Pick up vitality where you can but at 40 you can still get away with mostly stacking dex. +attack speed, lifesteal, +life per hit are all great stats for weapons. +critical hit chance, +attack speed % are awesome on your gloves, rings, and amulets.

Again remember don’t spend too much gold on the auction house. You should be slowly saving up so that when you hit 60 you can pick up a few really nice pieces of gear to help you progress through Act 1 Inferno. I would only buy upgrades off the AH if I find I’m struggling through portions of acts. If you’re blazing through no problems don’t even worry about buying upgrades.

Tips

Again just want to reiterate the importance of not wasting money. You can spend 100k now to get a 150dps weapon or save that 100k and buy a 700 DPS weapon when you hit 60. Choice is up to you, but, I’d recommend saving money.

Not much to write here. Pretty straight forward. Do quests. Level up. Enjoy the scenery 🙂

You can find more high level builds here in my monk builds section.

How to gain weight the healthy way | Summer bulking diet

My friend Lynn, who is a great football coach(and has a sweet motorcycle) asked for some bulking up advice for his players. They have all summer to train and want to put on some serious mass. This post will detail the key elements to putting on strength and size while minimizing your overall fat gain. Our goal is to gain as much muscle as possible while minimizing the fat, so that you end up with a solid well-built frame rather than just looking like a fat guy who maybe lifts weights.$nbsp;
Youtube video if you’d rather not read.

Table of contents:

  1. Overall Strategy
  2. Nutrition
  3. Workout
  4. Supplements
  5. Motivation

Overall Strategy

Your goal is to gain weight. There’s one key element to gaining weight, that no matter who you are or what you do that is constant, and that is the need for an caloric excess. Your body cannot create something from nothing. Therefore you need to take in more calories then you expend in order to gain muscle. It doesn’t matter how hard you workout, it doesn’t matter how many supplements you take. If you don’t eat enough calories you will not gain muscle. Period. You can still gain strength, endurance, speed, etc. But without a caloric excess you will never put on any noticeable size.

Nutrition

Originally this section was titled “diet”, but I changed it because I don’t like the word diet. Diet implies that it’s a plan you follow for a few weeks or months and then quit once you’ve reached a body composition goal. This is the wrong mindset. If you want to truly create a body that’s admired by all, you need to make good nutrition a lifestyle choice. Temporary diets will create temporary results. Lifestyle changes will create permanent results.

Macro nutrient breakdown

If you don’t know what macro nutrients are here’s a good resource. But very simply macro nutrients are your carbs, fats, and proteins. Manipulating your intake of macro nutrients is the easiest and best way to change your body composition. I like the KISS principle(keep is simple stupid) so I’ll make this guide very very simple and I won’t throw numbers at you. If you want specific numbers on how many grams of protein or carbs you should take there are lots of good resources out on the net. But I think those numbers confuse the issue, so how about I just tell you what kinds of things should make up a meal.

Each meal should contain:

  • One portion of meat. I find for me at 198lbs 12-16ozs of meat per day along with two scoops of protein(50g) is enough protein to keep me fueled.
  • One portion of fat. Generally the fat just comes with the meat and from the cooking oil used. Don’t worry about the fat, if you’re eating fatty meats and cooking with oil you’ll get plenty.
  • One portion of carbs. The carb portion is the portion that you’ll manipulate. Keep your proteins and fats the same and manipulate your carb intake depending on how fast you’re gaining weight.

Example meals:

  • Two chicken thighs with one sweet potato. This is a quick and easy meal I LOVE. You can set your oven to 500 degrees, coat the chicken thighs with seasoning, cut up the sweet potato into quarters, then bake it all for about 40 minutes. You’ll get crispy chicken with fully cooked potatoes.
  • Steak with sweet potatoes.
  • Stir-fry with 2 cups(cooked) rice.
  • Fajitas(try to keep tortillas used between 3-4, I try not to eat too much flour/pasta and will explain later)
  • Three eggs, two strips of bacon, one potato fried, half an avacado.
  • 8ozs of hamburger meat fried with fried potatoes and a side of spinach salad.

You get the idea. Every meal has a meat portion, a carb portion, and some veggies. I recommend buying a big bag of spinach every week and having a spinach side salad with each meal.

Meal I just made, was cooking in the oven as I was writing this post: chicken thigh, sweet potato, and spinach salad.

Manipulating carbs

As I said earlier you want to keep your protein/fat the same and manipulate your carbs. If you notice you’re gaining more fat than you want, eat less carbs. If you notice you’re not putting on the size/strength that you want, eat more carbs.

For example… if you wanted to gain more weight, instead of one sweet potato with the chicken thighs, you could eat one and a half sweet potatoes. Or even two. If you found that you were starting to get fat around the belly instead of eating one sweet potato with the meal maybe you wouldn’t eat any, carbs for the next three days, or cut down your carbs in half for the next week.

A word of caution: pastas and flour

Through my bodybuilding experience I’ve really found that the thing that makes me put on the most fat are grain products like pastas and flour. I won’t go into the science here, one because I’m not at all qualified to do so, and two because it’s quite complicated. What I’d suggest however is to just try it out. See if eating less grains makes you feel better and helps your body composition.

I used to eat a TON of pasta, I’m talking half a box of spaghetti with one meal, and then I’d have to take a nap. That’s how much glucose was being shuttled into my system and the resulting spike of insulin literally knocked me out. Now after a meal of meat and sweet potatoes I feel more energized. This is the greatest signal for me to avoid grains. Food should make you ENERGIZED. I don’t think it’s natural to need a nap after each meal.

Grain products: pastas, anything made with flour, buns, cereal, etc.

FAT does not make you fat

This is a myth that’s been floating around the weight-loss industry for as long as the weight-loss industry has existed. Fat doesn’t make you fat. Your body NEEDS fat to thrive. Cholesterol is a building block of testosterone. And testosterone is essential to building muscle. So if you try to cut out all fat from your diet you’ll end up holding yourself back from your goals.

I cut from 10% to 6% bodyfat using a ketogenic diet, where 65% of my calories came from fat, 30% came from protein, and only 5% came from carbs. So that’s proof right there that FAT in and of itself does not MAKE you fat. In my opinion CARBS are a much bigger contributor to stored body fat than fats are.

Cheap bulk foods:

Bulking can be really difficult for some people. Ectomorphs especially can find it really tough to get enough calories in to grow, especially as a teenager. Here are some of my favorite foods to help pack in the calories and not break the bank.

  • Chicken! Chicken thighs are great, you can get chicken quarters from wal-mart for less than $1 a pound.
  • Pork! Pork is another great cheap protein source. I like to get pork butt and shoulder roasts, they’re about $2.20/lb and just roast them in the oven or a slow cooker so you’ll have meat for several days.
  • Potatoes. Great source of carbs. Easy to cook. Delicious too.
  • Rice. Try not to eat too much white rice, but it’s still easy to cook and ridiculously cheap.
  • Peanut butter. I have a jar of peanut butter that sits next to my computer. Anytime I need extra calories or just feel lazy and don’t want to make a meal I’ll eat one or two tablespoons of peanut butter. *Quick breakfast tip, if you don’t have time to make breakfast in the mornings eat a banana with peanutbutter, just take scoops of PB and put directly on the banana. Great source of calories and WAY better for you than cereal/toast/etc.
  • Nuts. Almonds are my favorite but can be a little pricey. Peanuts are the cheapest. Like peanut butter I always have a bag of almonds and a jar of peanuts/mixed nuts sitting next to my computer and will snack on those throughout the day.

Now you’ll notice nowhere in this post do I mention fast food. Fast food is not a good option to get in extra calories. Don’t get so caught up in “needing to get enough calories” that you stuff your face with fast food. Think of the long term. Each burger you stuff in your face means that at the end of your bulk it’s that much more fat you’ll need to cut in order to reach your ideal body. A much better thing to do is carry around a bag of almonds/peanutbutter/peanuts with you and snack on those if you don’t have time to get in a proper meal. They are an excellent source of calories and healthy as well.

Workout

This post is written for beginner and intermediate level lifters in mind. Disregard this section if you can bench more than 315, squat 405, or dead 500+.

Full body workouts are the way to go for gaining lots of size quickly, especially for beginners. You’re at a point where your body can handle heavy full body workouts three times a week. And you want to put your body under maximal stress so that all the nutrients you’re getting in can be most effectively utilized re-building muscles 24/7.

If you read muscle magazines you’ll see a lot of bodybuilders advocating single body part splits. So chest monday, legs tuesday, bis/tris wed, etc. Not only have these guys been lifting for 15+ years, but they’re also on a boat load of steroids, and they’re spending 2-4 hours in the gym at a time just blasting one bodypart.

This is not an effective way to train for most people. I like full body workouts because they’re fast, efficient, and give you the most bang for your buck in the gym. In as little as 45 minutes three times a week you can build a very solid foundation of muscle.

Being on a caloric excess(like you will be during your bulk) leads to very fast recovery times so they’re the best time to do full body workouts. You should feel completely refreshed and healed up for each session so you can give full effort to each workout and make some great strength gains in the process.

The madcow 5×5 program is my favorite full body workout program, you can find it here. I’ve used the program successfully for years and it’s helped take my bench from 205 to 315, squats from 225 to 365, and deads from 255 to 395.

Cardio

There’s this myth in bodybuilding that you shouldn’t do cardio when you’re on a bulk.

FALSE.

Cardio is great and should be done year round, whether you’re cutting or bulking. Now with that said your cardio sessions should be well integrated with your lifting sessions. This means don’t do a bunch of sprints the day before your heavy leg day. I like to do my high intensity cardio sessions immediately after my leg workouts. So if I do squats Monday I’ll incorporate 5-8 HIIT(high intensity interval training) sprints as my cardio for the day. And on days before heavy leg days I’ll try to do lower intensity cardio, so slow jogs, ellipticals, walking on a treadmill at a high incline, etc.

Cardio is great for getting bloodflow throughout the body and actually helps you to repair and recover faster because of this improved circulatory system, and thus helps you build more muscle and gain more strength.

Supplements

I’ve come full circle on supplements. At the beginning of my bodybuilding journey I probably spent $3,000 a year on supplements. Then I went through a period where I decided they were all just a bunch of marketing hype and didn’t take much aside from a few vitamins. And now I take just a few of the most effective supplements.

Protein

If I were stranded on a desert island and could only take one supplement, I’d take protein. There is a noticeable difference in muscle soreness and recovery time when taking 25-50g of protein in a shake after a workout as opposed to not doing that.

If you’re short on money protein from Wal-Mart or Sams club will do the trick.

My favorite is Myofusion protein from Gaspari nutrition. It tastes great, mixes well, and has been super effective in helping in muscle recovery.

If you’re less than 150lbs take one scoop after each workout. If you’re over 150lbs take two scoops. If you’re a mass monster you probably don’t need my advice on how much protein to take 😛

Creatine

Creatine is one of the most misunderstood supplements out there. In short creatine helps pull water into your muscles and that increased volume makes you look bigger and also makes you stronger. It is not a steroid. It is not “useless.” True, if you stop taking creatine you’ll lose some weight quickly.

But here’s why it’s effective. 1) you don’t ever have to get off creatine if you don’t want to. 2) While you take creatine you are stronger. Therefore you can lift heavier weights, creating more muscle growth and more strength growth. On average you can get as much as a 5-10% boost to your strength one month after taking creatine. And it’s SUPER CHEAP too.

600g of Optimum Nutrition’s is only $15, you can find it here. Just take 5g a day in the mornings. No need to “load creatine” or cycle or any of that stuff. Just 5g a day is all you need. Here’s a fruit punch flavored creatine, may be a little easier to down than non-flavored creatine.

WARNING: Taking creatine drastically increases your body’s water consumption. If you take creatine you should consciously drink more water throughout the entire day. You should not take creatine if you do a lot of outdoor physical activity that leaves you regularly dehydrated. I personally don’t take creatine anymore because I’m in the Army and there’s occasions where we literally run out of water during field operations and being on creatine in such a situation could potentially be life threatening.

Pre-workout Supplements

Most pre-workout supplements are just loaded with junk and provide you with an unnecessarily high level of stimulants. I prefer to just drink a cup of green tea before my workouts now. In the past I’ve taken caffeine tabs before a workout. You can get No-Doze 200mg caffeine tabs from wal mart for less than $10.

I’ve found these pre-workouts to be effective however if you’re looking for something more “official.” For me I use about 1/4th to 1/8th the recommended dose of these and thus a $13 jug will last about six months. My favorite by far is Gaspari’s Super Pump, here’s a link to it. It’s cheap, effective, and tastes great. Another great supplement that’s gotten quite a bit of good reviews is 1MR, you can find it here.

If you wanted my honest opinion I say skip the pre-workouts, cut out as much caffeine from your day as possible, it’ll lead to an overall higher levels of energy and makes waking up so much easier because it improves your quality of sleep, however this is difficult for people to do so use what you need.

Vitamins

Multivitamins are great and just help fill in the gaps in your diet. I recommend NOW Adam, it has great reviews and a great profile. Multivitamins is one area that it makes sense to buy quality, because some of the cheap stuff you get from wal-mart might not even be digested by your body. Seriously, some cheap multivitamins you sh*t out most of it rather than absorbing.

Vitamin D3 – Great to supplement with, improves your overall mood and energy levels. Your body produces vitamin D3 naturally when you’re exposed to sunlight but as we spend more and more of our times indoors many people develop a Vitamin D deficiency. Supplementing when you’re deficient can really greatly improve your health/mood. I recommend NOW foods D3. NOW foods produces quality vitamins.

Motivation

Consistent training and consistent nutrition will lead you to an incredible body over the long term. Don’t try to kill yourself with every workout. Don’t freak out about making sure every meal is perfect. If you can CONSISTENTLY go to the gym and CONSISTENTLY eat pretty healthy then in the long run you’ll reach your goals.

Too many people try to be PERFECT at everything they do. No one is perfect. You will fail. And if you have the mindset that you need to be perfect most likely you’ll do great for two weeks, fail, and stop trying altogether.

It’s okay to fail

Failing is wonderful. Failure is the best teacher. Failure causes you to adapt and change.

So the next time you miss a workout or eat a bad meal don’t beat yourself up. Just take it as a lesson learned and say “okay, I failed, now it’s time to get back on track.”

It took me years before I could completely cut out junk food from my diet. It took probably a year’s worth of trying and failing before I finally instilled the habit of working out everyday. There were times when I’d stop working out for weeks. But everytime that I failed, I eventually got back on track.

Write down your goals

You should keep track of all your goals in a notebook and review them weekly. Make sure they’re realistic and make sure they have a definite timeframe.

For example good goals are:

  • Gain 25lbs to my squat by July 30th, 2012.
  • Gain 2lbs of muscle this month.
  • Cut 30 seconds off my mile by July 30th, 2012.
Share your goals with friends and ask them to keep you accountable to those goals. There’s nothing like peer pressure and looking like a fool infront of your friends to keep you motivated.

Keep track of your workouts

Write down your workouts in a notebook. Review it periodically to make sure that you’re increase your weight lifted, amount of reps, etc. Your body will only adapt to the stress you put on it. That’s why there are those guys you see in the gym month after month and it doesn’t look like they’ve changed at all. They do the same workouts every day, therefore their body has adapted to those workouts and they aren’t growing because they aren’t adding new stresses.

That’s why I love the 5×5 program. It forces you to constantly progress week over week.

How useful is magic find in Diablo 3? | Is it even worth wearing?

This is a question that’s been bugging me for a long time. It SEEMED like there was an effect when I wore magic find… but I could never definitively tell one way or the other if it was helping.

So, being the nerdy accounting major that I am, I kept detailed statistics and now we have a definitive answer!

Here’s an infographic I made that  illustrates the benefits of Magic Find, and then I’ll write up a bit extra for those who want more details.

Key observations

With 69% magic find barrels, corpses, chests, and trash mobs dropped noticeably more blue(and the occasional yellow) item.

Bosses(Warden and Butcher) both dropped higher iLevel blues and yellows. Keep in mind I had 5 stacks of the nephalem valor buff when killing Warden and Butcher so my actual magic find was sitting at 75% and 144% respectively. At 144% the yellows and blues dropped by the two bosses had a much higher chance of being 59+ than with 75% magic find.

At 0% magic find with five stacks of the nephalem valor buff I would notice about a 50/50 split in elite packs(yellow and blue names) dropping rare(yellow) loot. At 69% magic find with five stacks of nephalem valor I noticed it was roughly 75% of elite packs killed would drop at least one rare, sometimes multiple rares.

Finding good items

At 69% base magic find, over 10 runs I found that each run netted 1.7 “good” items for the auction house. At 0% base magic find, over 10 runs, each run netted 1.5 “good” items for the AH.

I define a good item as anything I think has a good chance of selling. There’s a lot of items now you find in Act 1 that just won’t sell, not even if you put them for less than 5k on the auction house, and that’s just not worth the slots in my opinion especially when you consider those same ten slots could be used for items that sell between 200k-1mil gold.

Most of the items included in this “1.7 per run” would sell between 50k and 300k on the auction house.

So extrapolating this information 69% increased magic find increases your chance to find a good item by .2 per run. Double your base magic find to 138% and you’ll increase your chance to find good items by .4 over 0% magic find. Over 100 runs that equals out to be 40 more items to sell on the Auction House, and if we assume each item sells for 200,000 that’s an extra 8,000,000 gold in revenue from your increased magic find.

Conclusion

Magic find is great… IF you’re not sacrificing so much DPS/damage mitigation that it dramatically slows down the speed of your runs. There’s a break even point(which I didn’t calculate because jesus christ that would be complicated) where magic find actually costs you loot as you’re running through a dungeon so much slower.

Let me know if you found this infographic useful in the comments, if so I’ll keep collecting data on different aspects of D3 and post them up.

Monk DPS Speed build | Blaze through farming runs | Easily skip trash packs

Here’s a video of the build and then the write-up will follow for those that would rather read.

Intent behind this build:

To make farming runs as efficient as possible. So that means maximizing DPS while minimizing the risk of death. As we all know full-out DPS builds can be risky when running against certain elite packs.

Primary offensive skills:

Crippling Wave with Concussion Rune

  • This is a great spirit gen and acts both as an offensive and defensive ability. The slow is great for kiting elite packs and for quickly moving through a dungeon without having to clear the trash(more on that later). The reduced damage also helps your monk’s survivability since we’re taking a purely offensive mantra(mantra of conviction) instead of a more defensive mantra like mantra of healing or mantra of evasion.

Sweeping Wind with Blade Storm Rune

  • Sweeping wind is a wonderful passive DPS generator. I love the way you can set it once during a fight and forget about it. With three stacks the +60% AOE damage is insane, and when you consider the additional +48% damage given to you by Mantra of Conviction this almost feels overpowered. Almost 🙂

Mantra of Conviction with the Overawe Rune

  • The Overawe rune changes Mantra of Conviction’s base DPS increase from 12 to 24% and increases the DPS increase by 48% for the first three seconds after activating the ability. I can’t stress how incredibly powerful this ability is. If you have the spirit to spare, spam this mantra every 3 seconds!

Primary Defensive Abilities:

Serenity with the Peaceful Repose Rune

  • I’ve fully converted from using the 4 second duration rune on Serenity to Peaceful Repose. Having that second heal ontop of Breath of Heaven is invaluable against elite packs in Inferno. With this rune you won’t miss not having Mantra of Healing up.

Breath of Heaven with Blazing Wrath Rune

  • Just a must have skill for running Inferno. The heal is great and the 15% DPS increase is even better! Try to keep this buff up at all times, I like to start off fights with Breath of Heaven even if I’m at full health just for that extra DPS boost.

Passives:

I’m using transcendence, seize the initiative, and one with everything. Your choice of weapons/equipment build really dictate what passives you want to use so I won’t go into it here. None of these passives are really VITAL to the build.

Strategy

My strategy farming now is to use Dashing Strike to move between groups of mobs and won’t even bother to stop and kill a trash mob. This allows you to move very quickly through a map. The only times I stop moving is to kill elite packs. Sometimes this can get a bit hairy when you have a pack of regular mobs chasing you ontop of an elite pack, but if you play it safe and kite a bit initially to thin out the crowd you should be fine.

Fights start off by activating sweeping wind, making sure the breath of heaven buff is up, and then spamming crippling strike and mantra of conviction. Heals from serenity and breath of heaven as needed and I like to pop serenity if I’m going to be hit by a big attack, laser beam, frost nova. Maybe I’m just lazy but it’s easier than moving haha.

Butcher tip

Use dashing strike whenever the butcher charges up for his big attack, this will bring you through his body and make his attack miss. Much easier than running to his side and this way you don’t lose any DPS uptime on him.

That’s all I have, check out more monk builds here. I have a million gold giveaway going on, it ends June 30th, and all you have to do is post one healthy gaming tip you’d like to share with others in my facebook page here.

Would love to get feedback on what kind of builds/guides/videos you would like to see more of, please post in the comments below(easier for me to look at these than YT comments)
